In a perfect world, the bike purchase would leave enough money in ye’ old pocketbooks for a worktruck of some kind. Either that or a van. I’ve grown fond of my shitty Dodge Sprinter work rig, or something l ike a n Ex press that w ould let me live out my adventure build dreams.

T he above Toyota would be ideal though , although I can’t help but notice .... Does it look a bit *low* to you? At $4500 I’d expect blown shocks, but maybe the bed is just loaded.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Any thoughts on 2000s era Dakotas? They seem to have escaped the Tacoma/Ranger tax around here.

It doesn’t really look low to me - the base suspension 2wd trucks from 20+ years ago weren’t tall at all.

Looks like a nice truck.

All I can see is cheap hubcaps on a bronze statue dedicated to Toyoda-san but yeah you could probably drive it....three grand tops.

My dad had an absolute stripper model (2wd, short bed, single cab) and it was barely taller than his Escort. Any smaller and it would've been considered a minitruck

The rear looks like an inch low but it could just be the way it’s parked.

But yeah, the early 2wd models barely rode higher than your average sedan.

That looks about right on the ride height with a shell on the back. A 90's base Tacoma with a 4 cylinder has GVWR of not much, so there wasn’t any reason to spring them to do work.

I agree it looks about right height for 2wd.

As for Dakota, the era you spoke of are more of an in between truck. More the size of an f150\t100\tundra than a ranger\yota\s10. They are a big little truck. Or a little big truck.

The price of pickups weighed heavily on me as well.

I’ve got a 91 Mazda b2600i I swapped a Mitsubishi 4d55t into last year. That motor failed last week. And I use my pickup as my service truck for work(small engine repair) so it’s a necessity. As I started pricing resleeve\rebuild kits and machine work, new heads, new short blocks, new long blocks and new complete motors(I’ve learned so much about 4d56 s the past week) I wondered if I should just get a new pickup. I couldn’t find anything that would meet my requirements(less than $3000, extended cab, 4wd) and be more solid\str aight than my current truck with a new motor. And I DEFINITELY couldn’t find a diesel one for less than $3000.

Can you FIND any Dakotas of that era?  IIRC they were pretty blah engineering...  they might all be turned into refrigerators by now.  Maybe I just don’t notice them on the street?

Yep- I think a lot of the trucks that survived were 4x4 and/or have been lifted a bit. But the bone stock 2wd trucks were pretty low.

It gets less sharp lol. He started with the best paint.

But, it looks like it's in good shape and the interior is nice! Plus it's a 2wd.

That truck with a 4cy and an auto is going to be borderline dangerously slow.

One of my roommates has a rust free taco he is trying to sell here in Socal. He keeps telling me he only thinks its worth like $2k max with the bed cap. Meanwhile the only problems are some minor dents, 250k+ miles, and the CEL that he hasnt fixed. That shit would sell in the PNW or NE for like $5k plus easy!! Its an automatic 2wd though.

Here is a print add for the 99 Tacoma. It looks like that’s the normal ride height.

I think most were claimed by the frame recall. My dad took advantage of it and sold it back to Toyota for $1k over book value.

Very true around here - Chicago area.   The ones that were saved are the lifted 4x4s.

You need a van. Specifically a pre built adventure rig made from an old American truck based van. This Econoline is wonderful, not overdone, and very cheap at $6,000 for the work that’s been done. Perhaps prices of these are usually much higher but I think you would love this sort of thing.

I drove an ‘00 base 2wd Taco for two years for work. They are just seriously small and seriously low. It sat even lower than my ‘89 or ‘80. The auto with the 2.4 is dependable but still a dog. I would either hold out for a 3.4 (very rare on non-Prerunner 2wds) or a sticky boi.

Found one with the 3.4:

This might be sacrilege, but I’m honestly unsure which transmission I’d prefer all other things being equal...

Anyways, a 3.4 rwd extended cab sounds ideal. After watching this space for awhile, I can definitely see why you started paying more attention to Tundras

That’s cool, buuuuuuuut....

The best part of an adventure van is designing and building it yourself!

Solid point. I've only ever driven manual 4cy small trucks of that Era so I think my perception is skewed

That's what I want. A supremely usable truck with great visibility, yet still looks somewhat modern

An old Ford E series seems to be a popular starting point but this is not much more expensive than a trashed cargo spec one. Commercial vehicles hold their value. This would be like $3,000 in savings over doing it yourself from a needy ex fleet truck based van.

I would recommend a minivan as the starting point for a budget build.
